Vending machine dimensions: will it fit through your door? A checker

Check whether a full-size vending machine fits your doors, corridor corners and elevator, using AMS and Crane spec-sheet dimensions and weights. Free to use.

Short answer: a full-size vending machine is 72 inches tall, 33 to 47 inches wide and 32 to 37.5 inches deep, and weighs 493 to 688 lb before it's loaded, according to AMS and Crane spec sheets. In metric that's 183 cm (1,829 mm, 6 ft) tall, 84 to 119 cm wide, 81 to 95 cm deep and 224 to 312 kg. It travels upright on its narrow side, so a doorway needs about 33 to 38.5 inches (84 to 98 cm) of clear width depending on the model. The checker below tests every pinch point on your route: doorways, corridor corners, a door off a corridor, and the elevator.

This is for facility managers, building managers and office managers in British Columbia who have found a spot and want to know whether a machine can actually reach it. Measure the route from the loading door to the spot, then enter what you have.

The checker needs JavaScript. The tables under "Worked results" answer the common cases.

Your margin for hands and wobble. 1 inch is tight; 2 is comfortable.

How far the machine sits off the floor while it's moved. Ask the operator; 2 inches is our default.

Measure between the door stops with the door fully open, not the door slab.

For a right-angle turn, wall to wall in each corridor.

The common pinch: turning from a hallway into a break room.

From the door to the back wall.

On the capacity plate in the car. Convert kg × 2.2.

Add the movers and the dolly if they ride along.

Many elevator capacity plates in Canada give the rated load in kg. Set the checker's units to "Centimetres and kg" and enter the plate figure as it is.

The narrow side is what matters at a doorway: the machine goes through on whichever of width or depth is smaller. Note that a wider machine isn't always harder to move: the Crane Combo 6 is 46 inches wide but only 32 deep, so it clears a narrower doorway than a 35-inch-square AMS machine.

Height: every model is 72 inches. On a dolly that lifts it 2 inches, it needs 74 inches of clear height, which most doorways have; the place to check is a low header, a ceiling bulkhead or a sprinkler pipe on the route.

How the checker works

  • Doorways and elevator doors: the machine's narrow side plus your margin must be no more than the clear width.
  • Corners: the machine stays upright and is treated as a rectangle on the floor. It passes if its long side fits across the second corridor without turning, or if it can be turned round the corner. For the turn we use the standard geometry for moving a rectangle round a right-angle corner: the longest box of width w that fits is the minimum, over the turning angle θ, of a / cos θ + b / sin θ − w / (sin θ cos θ), where a and b are the corridor widths.
  • Elevator car: the machine goes in narrow side first and must fit the car's width and depth with your margin. If it only fits turned sideways inside the car, the checker says so, because that turn depends on the door position.
  • Rated load: the machine's weight (shipping weight for AMS models) plus anything you enter for people and equipment must be under the car's rated load.

It doesn't know about stairs, steps or ramps. A machine of this weight needs a powered stair-climber or a different route; tell the operator before install day.

Before the machine arrives

Under WorkSafeBC's Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, work areas must allow the safe movement of people, equipment and materials, and there has to be a safe way in and out of every place where work is done (Part 4, s.4.32–4.33). That applies to the spot too: once the machine is in, it must not narrow an exit route. Our space and power checklist covers the spot itself: floor, outlet, signal and the 12-point check.

If the spot works and the route works, the next question is whether the site has enough people. The site-fit scorer answers that in a minute. With VendFynd, the operator covers the machine, delivery, install, stocking, service and removal at $0 to you; you provide the spot and an outlet, about $15–20 a month in power for a drink machine. See if your site qualifies.

About this data

Dimensions and weights are the manufacturers' published figures for ten common full-size models, re-read on 2026-10-12. AMS publishes shipping weights; Crane publishes machine weights. A machine loaded with product is heavier. Your operator may bring a different model, so ask for its spec sheet and enter the closest match. This checker is a planning aid: the operator should still walk the route before install.

Frequently asked questions

What are the standard dimensions of a vending machine?

The full-size machines we checked from AMS and Crane are all 72 inches (183 cm) tall. Widths run from 33 to 47 inches (84 to 119 cm), depths from 32 to 37.5 inches (81 to 95 cm), and weights from 493 to 688 lb (224 to 312 kg). A snack machine is usually the narrowest; a large drink machine the widest and heaviest.

How much does a vending machine weigh?

Empty, the ten full-size models we checked weigh 493 to 688 lb (224 to 312 kg). AMS publishes shipping weights and Crane publishes machine weights. A machine loaded with drinks or snacks weighs more.

Will a vending machine fit through a standard door?

It depends on the clear opening, not the door size. A machine goes through on its narrow side, which is 32 to 37.5 inches on the models we checked. With an inch of room, a 34-inch clear opening takes the narrowest snack and combo models; most others need about 36 inches.

Can a vending machine go up in a passenger elevator?

Often, if the car is deep enough. The machine needs a door opening wider than its narrow side, a car at least as deep as its long side plus a little room, enough height for the machine on a dolly, and a rated load above the machine's weight plus the movers. The checker tests all four.

What if the machine won't fit through our door?

There are usually options: a narrower model, taking the door leaf off its hinges for the install, a different entrance or a service elevator. Tell the operator the narrowest point before install day, so they bring the right machine and equipment.
