Short answer: Burnaby gyms post a median of 88.5 hours a week on Google, and 6 of 44 are open 24/7. Burnaby's industrial sites post a median of 42.5 hours, a standard office week. But the warehouse number is misleading: six industrial sites say on their own websites that they run around the clock, and only one of them says so on Google.

This is for gym owners, warehouse and plant managers in Burnaby, British Columbia, and anyone deciding whether their hours suit a vending machine. It's a VendFynd analysis of 133 businesses found in Burnaby in September 2026.

What we measured

On September 26, 2026, VendFynd's Lead Finder searched Google Places within 5 km of a central Burnaby point for two kinds of site: gyms and fitness centres, and industrial sites (manufacturers, warehouses, wholesalers and storage). We kept only listings with a Burnaby address and a matching Google type, which left 47 gyms and 86 industrial sites. For each, we added up the weekly opening hours it posts on Google, and read its own website for signals such as "open 24 hours" or a staff count.

No business is named here. The counts are all that's published.

Gyms: long hours are the norm

Of the 47 gyms, 44 post their hours.

The middle half of Burnaby gyms are open between 74 and 110.5 hours a week, and 39 of 44 (89%) are open at least 60. That's two to three times a typical office week, spread across mornings, evenings and weekends: exactly when a member finishes a session and wants water or a protein bar.

What it means for a gym thinking about a machine:

  • Long hours are a point in your favour. Our site-fit scorer gives 13 of 15 hours points at 100+ hours a week and the full 15 at 24/7.
  • 24/7 clubs should go cashless. At the six round-the-clock gyms, many hours are unstaffed. A card-only machine avoids cash handling, and the operator should put a refund number on the machine.
  • Members, not staff, are the traffic. Gyms have few employees. Our analysis of Vancouver licences found only 9 fitness licences in that city report 40 or more staff, which is why fit depends on members through the door.

Industrial sites: the posted hours are the office's

Of the 86 industrial sites, 70 post their hours.

On Google, 49 of 70 (70%) post 45 hours a week or less. Taken at face value, that looks like a sector that goes home at five.

It isn't. When we read the businesses' own websites, 6 of the 86 industrial sites say they operate 24 hours, and 4 publish a staff count. Only 1 site posts 24/7 hours on Google. The posted hours are for the reception desk or the will-call counter; the production floor or warehouse runs on its own schedule.

That gap matters for vending, because shift workers are the people a break-room machine serves best. BC's Employment Standards Act says no employee may work more than 5 consecutive hours without a meal break of at least half an hour (s.32). On an evening or overnight shift, that break comes when every café nearby is closed.

What it means for a warehouse or plant:

  • Tell the operator your shift pattern, not your Google hours. A site that looks like 42.5 hours a week online may be a 120-hour site in practice.
  • Break-room access for restocking is the practical question. Most operators restock during the day shift.
  • Staff count beats foot traffic. Industrial sites get few Google reviews (few customers visit), so review counts badly understate how many people are on site.

Where these sites are

Half of the listings in both categories are within about 3 km of the centre point (median 2.9 km for gyms, 3.0 km for industrial). Burnaby plans its densest growth around four town centres, Metrotown, Brentwood, Lougheed and Edmonds, according to the City. The gyms follow the town centres; the industrial sites sit in the business parks and along the rail and river lands between them.

About this data

  • Source: VendFynd Lead Finder, one hunt run on 2026-09-26: Google Places listings within 5 km of a Burnaby centre point (49.2488, -122.9805), categories "gyms" and "industrial".
  • Filtering: listings kept only with a Burnaby address and a Google type that belongs to the category (for example, shoe stores and physiotherapists were removed from gyms; parks, shops and corporate offices from industrial). 47 of 54 gym listings and 86 of 115 industrial listings were kept.
  • Hours: the sum of the opening hours posted on each Google listing; 44 gyms and 70 industrial sites post hours. "24/7" means 168 hours.
  • Website signals: read from each business's own website where it has one (44 of 47 gyms, 78 of 86 industrial sites).
  • Limits: a 5 km radius doesn't cover all of Burnaby, and Google listings miss businesses without a listing. Treat the shares as a sample, not a census. No business names, addresses or reviews are published, in line with Google's terms.

Frequently asked questions

What share of Burnaby gyms are open 24 hours?

In our September 2026 count, 6 of the 44 Burnaby gyms that post their hours on Google were open 24/7 (14%), and 18 (41%) were open 100 or more hours a week. The median was 88.5 hours a week.

Why do warehouses post such short hours on Google?

Posted hours usually describe the front office or the pickup counter, not the shift floor. Of 86 Burnaby industrial sites, only 1 posts 24/7 hours on Google, but 6 say on their own websites that they operate around the clock.

Does a machine need 24/7 access to be restocked?

No. Operators agree a restocking window with the site, usually during staffed hours. Long opening hours matter because they mean more people use the machine, not because the operator needs to come at night.
